#NoFilter
Imagine a world where we didn’t use filters. And no, I don’t mean just on Instagram and dog filters in Snapchat. I’m saying all of the time, especially when we speak. Life would be so much better, and perhaps easier, if we could just in the wise words of John Mayer, “Say What We Need to Say.“
The Good
As a brand, you can assume you’re in a competitive space. Rarely will you be the sole company doing whatever it is you do. Don’t hide what makes you different from the rest. Being different doesn’t have to have a negative connotation. In fact, let it be your USP (unique selling point). What makes you stand out from the crowd? Be blunt. Be honest. Scream it to the mountain tops. If people don’t like it, well, not everyone has good taste.
Imagine if McDonald’s ran an ad that said “Whoever said we were the healthy choice? Order the large.” I don’t even eat McDonald’s (other than their fries) and I’d probably go buy some if I saw an ad like that. Picture an ad for natural LED light bulbs that says, “Didn’t you want the inside of your house to feel like a hospital?” I have much more respect for the truth than boring marketing tactics.
The Bad
Our world is overly sensitive and no matter how hard you try – you will always offend somebody. Which if you ask me, might just move this back up to ‘the good’ section. I believe there’s a risk you pay being blunt, but it does save time. And time is money. I still think the Social Media Team for Cinnamon Toast Crunch should have responded with, “Holy shrimp!”, but to each their own. If you’re out of the loop, I encourage you to get caught up.
Has always been my favorite meme. It’s even better now.
The Ugly
Well, no filter means no filter. There’s no hiding or using cover up – all natural. As I mentioned earlier, you will offend people. You have to be ready for the outbursts of both good and bad. When you’re bold, news moves fast. A brand’s reputation is important, so you need to be sure you stay true to your mission, vision and values while being honest with your audience. So next time you hesitate to rethink your choice of words, maybe don’t.
