Being A Leader vs. Being A Boss
When you ask someone to describe someone they look up to, you’ll notice they mention traits about who they are as a person. Rarely, if ever, will you hear they have the nicest hair, eyes, etc. We highlight their character and personality, ultimately what shapes them as a person. The same holds true for someone we’re not fond of. It’s not because they wear plaid with polka dots, it’s because their personality sucks like a vacuum.
Anyone can tell others what to do, but not everyone can lead. A boss is someone who tells you what to do, but doesn’t give the time of day to explain why it is you’re doing what you are. I’ll lead with the bad news first. Pun intended.
A Boss
Strengthens Your Character
A boss will give you the character they lack. Typically, they are your wake up call that life is not just rainbows and butterflies. There isn’t much of a relationship between you and them. The only thing you have in common is work and that’s about all you’ll ever discuss. I’ve had people above me, meet me on multiple occasions, introducing themself each time with, “It’s so nice to finally meet you.” If and when they become a ‘boss’, they will fail to lead.
A boss will show you what you don’t want to be like in the work place and as a person in general. As much as it might impact you negatively, knowing what not to do is just as important as knowing what to do. Learn from them and do better. It won’t be hard to do.
Views You as Competition
Bosses are missing passion for what they do and view others as competition. Instead of helping you grow, they limit their knowledge on purpose. They don’t view who they manage as their team and instead, are threatened by those who are smarter than they are. Their only motive is their own success – not the company’s, or the team’s.
Overall, they have a negative impact on those around them. People tend to avoid a boss, rather than turn to them. They are simply just someone who tells you what to do. A statement I’ve heard and a book I’ll have to read, People Leave Managers not Organizations!
A Leader
Inspires
A leader leaves a long lasting, positive impact on those around them. They lead their team with passion and get to know each member individually. I bet someone pops in your head when you hear the term leader and you think of them as a role model and inspiration. Leaders have qualities that people around them admire and strive to be like.
Those around them feel motivated and encouraged to do their best. They feel supported to do good work and aren’t afraid to ask questions or hold back. Their positive attitude spreads to all involved.
Cares
About you, the company, the project and the end goal. They know they need you to get there and care about how you operate and feel along the way. Your thoughts and ideas are encouraged. Perhaps they even enjoy when the team speaks up to challenge what’s been assigned.
Ultimately, you as a person along with your work will feel valued. You won’t second guess your contributions and worth. Not every day will be perfect, but when you’re in a rut – a leader will notice and care enough to pick you back up.
Closing Time
Yes, like the song. I truly believe the main difference between being a boss and a leader depends on your motive. Your intentions will define your character. Especially in the work environment, it’s important to work under leadership instead of working for a boss. A leader is a role model, someone who inspires us to do better every day and continue to grow. Be sure to be someone you enjoy working with.
