Alcohol You Later
I guess it’s not a secret that I enjoy alcoholic beverages because I’ve been getting a variety of ads lately. Good thing this is normal in the industry, we even have beer on tap! I figured a blog about advertising alcohol would be neat. I hope you got that one – if not, I’ll wine about it later.
Call Me Old Fashioned
One of the many things I love about advertising: the average person has no idea what’s happening behind the curtain. Next to tobacco, alcoholic beverages are one of the main culprits for highly regulated forms of marketing. According to Wikipedia, the alcohol brand’s media can only be placed where 70% of the audience is over the legal drinking age.
Have you noticed ads don’t show anyone consuming the alcohol? There aren’t actually any laws that exist prohibiting this – but there are strict rules which ban this, as it breaks TV station codes of conduct and network guidelines.
Shockingly enough, life doesn’t revolve around just us. Other countries have different rules and regulations for advertising. According to the Wikipedia article mentioned above, Russia banned almost all media, including television and billboards, as of January 2013. In Australia, TV and radio ads are permitted from noon until 3:00 pm on school days and from 8:30 pm to 5:00 am every day.
Whiskey Business
I wanted to share a few ads I really enjoyed. I’m a sucker for humor, and in my opinion these are well thought out. I saw this one for Captain Morgan on YouTube actually laughed out loud. Another reason I think this is great – it works as audio only and makes sense without the video. Confirm you’re 21+ of age to watch:
If you’re not on TikTok, you probably won’t understand this one. If you are on TikTok, you’ll understand why this is so clever. I actually saw this on TikTok as a reaction video – not the ad itself on a platform. My new business intern also did an ad analysis presentation about this one and it was amazing!
